Horse Riding in Peneda-Gerês
During this week we are going to explore the North of Portugal on the back of one of the most famous breeds of horses in Portugal, the Garrano Horse. It will be a unique opportunity to discover beautiful places riding a strong horse, see unique landscapes in the forgotten corner of Portugal that is the North. It is one of the most densely populated regions, where you can see the footprints of history over the centuries. Nature, mountains, animals, waterfalls and the feeling of adventure are all the things that can be expected in this gorgeous area.
We will have an opportunity to get to know rural Portugal in the most traditional way, riding a horse that has existed for thousands of centuries. The Garrano will show you the green mountains of Portugal. Our journey takes us to the National Park of Peneda Gerês and also to a small village called Póvoa de Lanhoso. We also have the chance to visit the most typical villages on horseback, get to know the locals and feel a part of nature.
Day 1
Arrival in Porto and transfer to Rural House - Garrano horses introduction
Arrival in Porto. There will be a transfer to the Rural House. Alternatively, you can pick up a rental car for the rest of the week. After check-in you are free to explore restaurants in the area for lunch.
Your adventure starts in the early afternoon, when you will have the opportunity to have the first contact with the Garrano horses in the equestrian centre. You can tour the stables, be introduced to the horses and have a short introduction about this breed.
After this presentation you will do a small trekking around the area to get to know the grounds and surrounding area of the mountains, you will have a guide available to accompany you and help you if you need. Free time for dinner.
Day 2
Horse riding
Breakfast in the Rural House. Today our program is entirely organised around horse riding. You will prepare the horse for the day ride. Lunch can be provided in the mountains. You will always be accompanied by your horse and the beautiful landscapes of the national park. In this ride you will not only witness the strength of the Garrano horse but also have the chance to see the region's best known waterfalls, observe the variety of fauna and flora in the park, visit the Soajo village and see many other magnificent sights.
Dinner will be served in the house.
Day 3
National Park Peneda Gerês
Breakfast in the Rural House. Free time in the morning for your own activities as well as lunch time.
In the afternoon you will have a different experience with the Garrano horse. You will take a one-hour horse-carriage ride through the park.
The rest of the day you will visit the Campo do Gerês Gate, one of the five gates to enter the national park, where you will learn a little more about the region and its history. You can also see and buy typical products of the region.
Free time for dinner.
Day 4
Póvoa de Lanhoso Village
Breakfast in the Rural House. After check out, enjoy your last activity in the National Park Peneda Gerês. We will do one last trip through the park in an electric E-Tuk. Your lunch can be prepared in a tipical restaurant before you leave to the village of Póvoa de Lanhoso Village.
During the rest of your stay, you will overnight at the Requeixo House, a tipical rural house in the middle of the mountains. Check in and free time to rest or explore the near surroundings. You have many options: you can explore the stables and see the horses or you can stay in the house and enjoy all services and facilities, such as the swimming pool, games in the garden, see the farm animals... or visit the surrounding area, explore Póvoa de Lanhoso, go to museums, have a walk in the beautiful gardens or spend time in a terrace.
Day 5
Póvoa de Lanhoso Village - 4-hour horse ride to Lanhoso Castle
Breakfast in the Requeixo House. After breakfast, you will prepare the horses for a 4 hours ride. Today you will have the opportunity to enjoy a day riding a Garrano. The ride will be from the Requeixo House to the magnificent Lanhoso Castle. Along the way we will make several stops at the most beautiful green spaces of the village, such as the famous Carvalho de Calvos. Here you can relax a bit and have something to drink in the Bio Centre. Before you reach the Castle you will pass by one pre-Roman fortified settlement, with human occupation traced back to the Chalcolithic Age through to the Romanization; this is, in fact, one of the most historical monuments in the region. When you arrive at the top of the Castle, you will see a prime view of the whole village and the surrounding region. You will have the opportunity to visit its ruins and have a delicious traditional lunch at the local restaurant.
After lunch, you will make the ride back to the Requeixo House, where you can enjoy some free time for the rest of the day.
Day 6
Adventure Park Diverlanhoso
Breakfast in the Requeixo House. Free time in the morning for a brief horseback ride or a hike around the area or, in case you're in relaxation mood, you can stay at the Requeixo House and enjoy the facilities.
In the afternoon you will have an adventure experience at the famous local Adventure Park . There are plenty of activities the park can offer: water walk, slide, canoeing in an artificial lake, mountain golf... Here you will have a special and unforgettable goodbye dinner. After dinner, you can enjoy the panoramic view over the mountains and the bright moonlight.
Return to the Requeixo House.
Day 7
Flight back
Breakfast in the Requeixo House. Make the check-out. Depending on your flight schedule, you will have a transfer to the Porto airport or you can drive to the rent-a-car station at the airport.

Casa Montanha is located in Campo do Gerês and facing the Peneda Gerês National Park, is divided into two T3 floors. It is close to all the main tourist attractions in the region, it is the perfect place to feel at home. It is a house with every comfort where you can enjoy a relaxing and natural environment.
- Requeixo House - Póvoa de Lanhoso
The Requeixo House emerges from the distant time that is the sixteenth century. It is a house representative of an old-fashioned lifestyle. Revovated for Rural Tourism in 1985, it was with much affection and concern that the main characteristics of the house were maintained.
