Camping Tour South

A camping safari through the South of Portugal

During this scheduled, safari-style mobile-camping tour we are going to explore the South of Portugal. The Alentejo region is more rural and seasonal. It is sun, music, sea and landscapes. Here we visit the Natural Park of Arrábida, Évora and the medieval town of Reguengos de Monsaraz, among others.

Across the Algarve, we feel as though we are passing through an area full of different traditions, unchanged for many centuries. With a Mediterranean climate, it has some of Europe's most beautiful beaches, from where we can admire the rocky coastline. Our journey takes us to Aljezur (the 'untouched' Algarve), the village of Sagres (where nature and sea meet history) and Cabanas de Tavira, near the Ria Formosa Natural Park – one of the best preserved parks in Europe.

Day 1

Lisbon Airport – Sesimbra (Charneca da Cotovia)

Greeting at the airport and transport to the Campsite Valbom in Charneca da Cotovia, located near the Village of Sesimbra. Located at the heart of a dense pine tree forest it has a privileged view over the “Serra da Arrábida” (declared a Natural Park since 1976). Sesimbra is a pretty fishing and resort town that is located on the southern side of the Setubal Peninsula, 40km south of Lisbon.
Dinner at campsite.

Day 2

Sesimbra – Serra da Arrábida – Évora – Évoramonte

The Natural Park of Arrábida is a beautiful protected area with its many rare species. We continue our journey to Évora, a delightful Portuguese city that lies in the heart of the Alentejo regiobn and it is a museum sightseeing city with a vast historical and cultural wealth.
We reach the village of Évoramonte, situated around the hilltop at an altitude of 500m. Perched on that very hilltop is the castle, easily visible to anyone approaching the village.
Dinner and overnight at Camping Alentejo.

Day 3

Évora Monte – Reguengos de Monsaraz – Alvito – Barragem de Odivelas

In the morning: optional activities – hiking or a bike tour, alternatively a visit to Almourol Castle.
Our next visit is to Reguengos de Monsaraz. This village is the the center of a traditionally agricultural county and is known for its handicrafts, wines and numerous megalithic remains. Brief stop in Alvito, a village that has preserved its Manueline style buildings almost intact.
Dinner and overnight at Camping Markádia.

Day 4

Barragem de Odivelas – Sines - Porto Côvo

In the morning optional activities: animal watching in the Natural Park; horse riding; or boating and canoeing.
We continue the tour to Sines, a municipality located exactly at the centre of the south-west coast of Portugal.
Departure to Porto Côvo. Situated between the sea and the plains, it is a picturesque village surrounded by some of the most well-preserved beaches in Portugal. Its territory is part of the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Vincentine Coast.
Dinner and overnignt at Campingsite Costa do Vizir.

Day 5

Porto Côvo – São Teotónio (Odemira)

In the morning we can choose from the following activities: walking by the sea or the countryside; rides on horseback or by bicycle. Alternatively by car: the Fortress Pessegueiro Island or the Roman ruins of Miróbriga.
Continuing our journey to Odemira, part of the Natural Park. Dinner and overnight at Camping São Miguel, located in the Natural Park of Alentejo coast, just 4 km from the beautiful Odeceixe beach.

Day 6

São Teotónio (Odemira) – Aljezur – Sagres

In the morning we can choose between a cooking workshop or a walking tour.
Then we visit Aljezur. It represents the untouched Algarve. It is a small agricultural town situated in the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Vincentine Coast, where ruins of a 10th Century Moorish castle dominate the historic town centre and make beautiful panoramic views.
Arrive at Sagres. Dinner and overnight at Camping Orbitur Sagres.

Day 7

Sagres – Lagos – Cabanas de Tavira

In the morning we visit the village of Sagres. It is one of the few places in the Algarve where untouched nature and a rich historical and cultural heritage remain intact. The local population still dedicates itself to traditional activities such as fishing and farming, guaranteeing a rich local cuisine.
Then we continue to Lagos, the town itself is best explored on foot.
Arrival at Cabanas de Tavira. Dinner and overnight at Camping Ria Formosa, located very close to a true natural paradise, the Natural Park of the Ria Formosa, one of the few in Europe to be so well-preserved.
